June 5, 2014 Day two at Colorado Springs- Pikes Peak or Bust

We rode to the climax of Pikes Peak on the Cog Railroad.
Everyone should drive it once and if they survive ride the Cog Train to really enjoy the trip.

pic from within cog rail car as we climb to the top.

We stopped here to let a hiker off.
We continued our climb now above the tree line.
The mountain consists of crumbled red granite.
The view from the right side of the car.  Notice the snow covered mountain peak in the distance.
Becky blending in with the snow drifted around the Pike Peaks sign.
Doug enjoying a warm cup of coffee during our 30 minute stop at the top.
The human zoom. Notice the cloud coming in on the right.
 Pic at the Peak.

Becky standing on a very large drift of snow.

At 14000 feet there is snow very where. At 7 am it was 32 degrees with a 25 degrees chill factor.
 Another snowy scene.
The clouds started coming in on one side of the mountain
The windows are large and scenes spectacular.

The snow was deep around the tracks

Here about six feet deep June 5th.
Doug looking at a display of the cog and rail that power the cars along with diesel engines.

Another wonderful meal at home, Pork chop on the grill and broccoli with a bake sweet potato. This will be our last supper in Colorado. We have enjoyed the little time that we have had here. Some things we would like to do the next time.
We are planning on being in Kansas City MO tomorrow. It will take us about 12 hours total time if all goes well. We see that there is some weather issues in front of us and hope they stay there.

  1. I rode to the top and back in a car. I took the cog rail up and down THEN ran up the mtn ...Pikes Peak Marathon. It was June...and like you...I experienced plenty of snow. So glad you got to see it!
